Fire glass is tempered glass tumbled to remove sharp edges, in colors ranging from clear and bronze through deep blue and emerald. It refracts and reflects the flame — the flame becomes the lighting source and the glass becomes the jewel. Glass costs more than lava rock per pound but covers more area because of the dense pack.
Lava rock is volcanic rock crushed to a uniform size. It's textural, matte, and significantly cheaper than glass. It reads more rustic and is the right call for stone-clad pits where you want the media to recede into the form rather than stand out.
Prism Hardscapes stocks glass in seven colors: Aqua, Azura (deep blue), Bronze, Mist (smoky grey), Black, Golden, and Smoke. Cool colors (Aqua, Azura, Mist) cool down a warm-bronze Corten pit; warm colors (Bronze, Golden) amplify it. Black reads most architectural; Smoke is the quietest neutral.
Quantity depends on burner size: 1/4" glass at a 1" depth covers approximately 24 sq inches per pound. A 30" burner pan needs ~25 lbs of glass; a 48" needs ~75 lbs. Lava rock is similar by volume.
Fire glass and lava rock don't burn up — they last indefinitely if kept clean. Once a season, scoop the media into a bucket, rinse, dry, and replace. Replace any glass that has cracked from thermal shock (rare, but happens if water gets between the burner and the media before ignition).
Never mix glass and lava rock in the same pit — they expand at different rates and the glass can fracture against the rock.
