How to Care for Your Corten Steel Fire Pit

Understanding the Weathering Process

Corten steel — also known as weathering steel — is alloyed with chromium, copper, and phosphorus to form a stable oxide layer that protects the underlying metal from further corrosion. In the first few weeks outdoors, the surface transitions from mill-scale grey to a warm orange, eventually settling into the deep chocolate-brown patina that has made the material iconic in architecture and landscape design. This process is entirely normal and desirable; attempting to prevent it defeats the material's purpose.

First Season Best Practices

During the initial weathering phase — roughly the first 6 to 12 months — the oxide layer is still forming and will shed fine rust-coloured particles. Place your fire pit on a surface that can tolerate temporary staining, such as gravel, pavers with dark grout, or a sacrificial mat. Avoid setting it directly on light-coloured limestone or unsealed concrete if staining is a concern. Rain accelerates the patina cycle, so there is no need to cover the pit during light showers; in fact, wet-dry cycles produce the most even and attractive finish.

Ongoing Maintenance

Once the patina has stabilised, Corten steel is remarkably low-maintenance. Brush out ash and debris after each wood-burning session to prevent moisture from pooling in the bowl. If you use a gas burner, a simple wipe-down every few months is sufficient. Avoid wire brushes or abrasive cleaners, which can strip the protective oxide and force the weathering cycle to restart unevenly. If the pit will be stored indoors for an extended period, ensure it is completely dry first — prolonged contact with standing water in an unventilated space can cause localised pitting.

With nothing more than occasional ash removal and common-sense placement, a Corten steel fire pit will outlast most other elements in your landscape. The patina only grows richer with time, making this one of the rare products that genuinely improves with age.
