Materiality
Our Materials
We work with five primary metals and composites — each chosen for its ability to age with dignity, weather with grace, and hold fire with authority.
Material 01
Corten Steel
Corten — also known as weathering steel — was developed for structural use in the 1930s and has since become the material of choice for sculptors and architects who value honest surfaces. When exposed to the elements, its outer layer oxidises into a rich, protective patina that stabilises over six to twelve months, shielding the steel beneath from further corrosion. No two pieces weather alike; your fire bowl will develop a colour and texture unique to your climate, orientation, and environment.
Weight: Heavy — 145–210 lbs per piece. Patina: Develops naturally over 6–12 months. Maintenance: None required; patina is self-healing.
Material 02
Hammered Copper
Copper has adorned the roofs of cathedrals, the hulls of ships, and the domes of capitols for millennia. We source 14-gauge solid copper sheet and hand-hammer each fire bowl on a custom form, creating a surface of subtle dimples that catches and scatters firelight. Over time, copper transitions from brilliant rose-gold through amber and chocolate to the celebrated verdigris green — a journey of years that rewards patience with extraordinary beauty.
Weight: Moderate — 85–165 lbs per piece. Patina: Rose-gold to verdigris over 2–5 years. Maintenance: Optional polish to preserve original finish.
Material 03
Blackened Steel
For clients who prefer a darker, more industrial aesthetic, we offer select models in blackened mild steel. The surface is treated with a hot-applied wax finish that deepens the colour to a near-true black while providing a layer of protection. Over time the wax wears through at contact points, revealing warm steel tones beneath — an intentional patina that rewards use.
Weight: Heavy — 130–200 lbs per piece. Patina: Wax wears to reveal warm steel tones. Maintenance: Re-wax annually to preserve finish.
Material 04
Cast Bronze
Our most exclusive material, cast bronze is reserved for bespoke commissions and limited editions. Each piece is cast using the lost-wax method — the same technique used for monumental sculpture since antiquity. The result is a fire feature of extraordinary density and presence, with a surface that can be finished from mirror-bright to a deep, antiqued umber.
Weight: Very heavy — 200+ lbs per piece. Patina: Controlled patination to client specification. Maintenance: Periodic waxing to preserve chosen patina.
Material 05
Brushed Stainless
Brushed stainless steel is our most contemporary option — clean, bright, and virtually maintenance-free. We use marine-grade 316L stainless with a directional brush finish that resists fingerprints and softens reflections. It will never rust, never patina, and never need refinishing. For clients in coastal environments or those who value consistency over character, it is the ideal choice.
Weight: Moderate — 100–160 lbs per piece. Patina: None — maintains original finish indefinitely. Maintenance: Occasional wipe with stainless cleaner.
