NFPA 54 Outdoor Fire Pit Compliance: Contractor's Guide
Short answer: NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code) applies to every outdoor gas fire pit installation. Key requirements: ½" line up to 60,000 BTU at 25 ft or ¾" line for 90,000+ BTU, dedicated manual shutoff valve within 6-10 ft of the fire pit, no manifolding fire pits onto grill or pool heater lines without upsized supply, and 6-inch clearance around any exposed pipe from combustibles. Local amendments always supersede the base code — call the building department before you dig.
NFPA 54 is the base US gas code adopted (with amendments) by every state and municipality. If you're installing an outdoor gas fire pit, you're subject to it whether you know it or not. This guide covers the sections that matter for outdoor installs — the parts a plumber references when they cut, size, and pressure-test the line.
What NFPA 54 actually covers (and doesn't)
NFPA 54 governs the gas piping system from the meter (natural gas) or tank (propane) to the appliance connection. It covers pipe sizing, materials, joints, pressure testing, venting, valve placement, and shutoff requirements. It does NOT cover:
The appliance itself (that's the manufacturer's UL / CSA listing)
Structural clearances around the fire pit (that's the fire pit manufacturer's manual + IRC/IFC)
Building permits (that's local building code — separate track)
Wood-burning fire pits (no gas piping = no NFPA 54)
For a gas fire pit install, NFPA 54 governs the line, but the fire pit's own manual + your local code cover the pit's clearance and structural placement. Both have to be right.
Gas line sizing — the numbers that actually matter
Pipe size is based on total BTU demand and run length. NFPA 54 Appendix A includes sizing tables by pipe material (Schedule 40 black iron, CSST, copper). The practical rules of thumb for outdoor fire pit installs:
Natural gas, black iron / steel pipe (residential 0.5 psi supply):
½" pipe: 45,000 BTU at 25 ft · 32,000 BTU at 50 ft · 26,000 at 75 ft
¾" pipe: 100,000 BTU at 25 ft · 70,000 BTU at 50 ft · 55,000 at 75 ft
1" pipe: 190,000 BTU at 25 ft · 130,000 BTU at 50 ft · 105,000 at 75 ft
1¼" pipe: needed if run exceeds 75 ft OR you're feeding multiple appliances totaling 200,000+ BTU
Propane (2 psi supply — after high-to-low regulator):
½" line: 155,000 BTU at 25 ft
¾" line: 315,000 BTU at 25 ft
Runs are shorter in practice because tanks sit close to the pit
For a 90,000 BTU fire pit at 25 ft of run: minimum ¾" natural gas line. Anything smaller runs the pit lean and produces yellow flames + sooting. This is one of the most-overlooked failure modes we see on retrofits.
Shutoff valve requirements
NFPA 54 section 8.1.2 requires a shutoff valve for each individual outdoor appliance. For fire pits specifically:
Manual shutoff valve within accessible reach of the fire pit — typically 6-10 ft
Valve must be full-port (¼-turn ball valve or approved equivalent), NOT a needle valve
Approved for outdoor exposure — brass or bronze body, not zinc
Some jurisdictions add: valve must be in a keyed, locking, or clearly-marked box to prevent kids from opening it
Distance from any ignition source — 6+ inches from open flame (basic safety)
For safety-critical installs (poolside, gathering areas), a keyed emergency shutoff at a defensible distance (20+ ft) is best practice on top of the near-pit valve. The near-pit valve handles routine service; the keyed valve handles emergency shutdown.
Manifold rules — sharing a line between fire pit + grill + pool heater
Common in outdoor kitchens — a plumber feeds a grill, a fire pit, and sometimes a pool heater off one gas manifold. NFPA 54 doesn't prohibit this but requires that:
Manifold pipe is sized for the SUM of all connected appliance BTU ratings, not the largest single load
Each appliance has its own shutoff valve
Pressure at the farthest appliance stays within +/-10% of nominal (0.5 psi natural / 11 in.w.c. propane)
A grill (60K) + fire pit (90K) + pool heater (200K) = 350K total demand. That needs 1¼" line back to the meter for a 50 ft run. Undersizing here is the #1 code failure we see on high-end outdoor kitchen jobs — the plumber sizes for the grill (biggest single load in their head) and forgets the pool heater dominates.
Pipe materials + joint types
NFPA 54 recognizes:
Schedule 40 black iron pipe: the traditional workhorse. Threaded joints, pipe dope or tape, pressure-tested. Cheap material, moderate labor. Buried runs require additional corrosion protection (rocks + sacrificial anode or PE-coated pipe).
CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing, aka Wardflex / Gastite): flexible stainless tubing with mechanical fittings. Faster install than black iron, especially for retrofits. Requires proper bonding to the electrical ground (a fault that caused CSST fires in the 2010s; current bonding rules address this). Any CSST install needs an electrician sign-off on the bond.
Type L copper: propane only in some jurisdictions; check locally. Natural gas has sulfur compounds that corrode copper over years — most jurisdictions ban NG copper as a result.
Polyethylene (PE) pipe: for buried gas lines only. Uses fusion joints. Requires a licensed PE installer in most states.
The mistake we see most on DIY-adjacent installs: PVC or PEX being used for a gas line. Both are for water only. Never gas. If you see PVC on a gas line, walk away and call the utility to disconnect.
Pressure testing — the sign-off step
NFPA 54 section 8.2 requires the finished piping system to hold pressure without leaking before any appliance is connected.
Natural gas system: pressurize to 3 psi minimum with air (or nitrogen), hold for 10 minutes, verify no drop on a calibrated gauge
Propane system: pressurize to 10 psi minimum, same 10-minute hold
Larger commercial systems: higher test pressures apply
The building inspector will require a photo or in-person verification of the pressure test result. Skipping this step is the fastest way to fail an inspection AND the fastest way to have a gas leak in year two.
Local amendments — where the base code gets overridden
NFPA 54 is the base. Every state and many cities layer amendments on top. Common ones for outdoor fire pit installs:
California: additional seismic anchoring requirements on gas manifolds. Also stricter emissions standards for burners.
Florida: hurricane-tie requirements on any gas line running above grade in high-wind zones (Broward, Miami-Dade).
Northeast (MA, CT, RI): stricter propane tank placement rules — 10 ft min from any structure vs the 5 ft base code.
Colorado + high-altitude Rocky states: BTU deration at altitude (5% per 1,000 ft above 2,000 ft). Impacts pipe sizing.
HOA / CC&Rs: private amendments layer on top of municipal code. Almost always stricter, never looser.

The permit process
For a permitted gas fire pit install, expect:
Plumbing permit for the gas line (pulled by the plumber, not the homeowner)
Building permit for any structural surround the fire pit sits in (masonry, pergola, deck cutout)
Electrical permit if the ignition system is 110V (uncommon; most ignitions are battery or spark)
Rough-in inspection before the trench is backfilled
Final inspection after appliance is connected and pressure-tested
Timeline: 2-6 weeks from permit application to final in most jurisdictions. Rush installs skip the process; unpermitted work is the fastest way to a stop-work order and 3× the cost of doing it right.
Frequently asked questions
Can I DIY the gas line for my fire pit?
Almost nowhere. Gas line work requires a licensed plumber in nearly every US jurisdiction. Homeowner exceptions exist in a few states for the OWNER'S primary residence, but even those require permitting and inspection. Insurance also drops coverage for unlicensed gas work, so a leak in year three becomes 100% out-of-pocket. Not worth it.
What if my fire pit isn't listed?
Every reputable manufacturer's gas fire pit is CSA / UL listed. If yours isn't, the inspector may refuse to sign off. Custom-built fire pits get treated as field-built appliances and need on-site engineering sign-off — expensive. Stick with a listed product.
Do I need a gas leak detector?
Not required by NFPA 54 for outdoor installs, but strongly recommended if the fire pit is under a covered patio or in an enclosed pool cabana. Combustible-gas detectors run $100-300 installed and give an audible + visual warning of any leak.
How often do gas lines need re-testing?
The initial pressure test at install is the required sign-off. After that, most jurisdictions don't require periodic re-tests. Best practice: hire a plumber for a 5-year inspection if you're on propane (tanks + regulators drift over time) or if the pit sits idle for extended periods.
What size line do I need for a low-BTU fire pit (say 45,000 BTU)?
½" line handles up to 45K at 25 ft run. Anything longer than 25 ft: bump to ¾". Anything above 45K: also bump. Cheap insurance against the yellow-flame, soot-covered install six months later.
